A Lisbon Tour of Irish Interest
On this special edition of the Wild Rover, we invite you to take a tour of Lisbon through Irish eyes. Professor Declan M. Downey of University College Dublin takes us back to Lisbon in the 17th century when Irish men and women found refuge, opportunities and a great welcome in Portugal. Two important landmarks from this time are the Irish College of St. Patrick in Alfama which was founded in 1590 and the Convento de Nossa Senhora do Bom Succeso which was founded in 1639 in Belém. The church in the convent was opened in 1670, the year that O'Carolan, the famous Irish harpist, was born. Listen to Professor Downey as he expands on the Irish in Lisbon at this time.
Enjoy!......

This very rare album is called The Gathering and it was put together by Diane Hamilton (1924 - 1991) who was something of a patron of Irish music in the 1970's. The album features Paul Brady, Andy Irvine, Donal Lunny, Tommy Potts and Peter Browne. For those of you who are Planxty fans, this is a show not to be missed.
Diane Hamilton was also responsible for bringing together Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem on her first visit to Ireland in 1955 where she recorded one of the first collections of Irish folk singers in Ireland on an album called 'The Lark in the Morning - Songs and Dances from the Irish Countryside'.
The show also includes music from Osna, Liam Clancy and Bakerswell.

Enjoy!

The Wild Rover - RadiaLx 2010 Special Edition

Starting life in 2007, the Wild Rover has been a beacon for Irish music at Radio Zero ( www.radiozero.pt ). Originally conceived and presented by Alexandre Matoso Gil, the show has been presented by Aidan McMahon since 2008.
Over the last couple of years in Ireland the economic Celtic Tiger of the country has had its tail severed but remarkably by contrast the traditional music scene has thrived and is in better condition than at any time in the country's history. Groups such as Lúnasa, Beoga, Dervish, Altan, Téada, Grada and Kíla are internationally renowned, and at the grass root's level there are more up and coming musicians emerging from music schools such as Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann which is the largest group involved in the preservation and promotion of Irish traditional music.
Tune in on Sunday the 4th of July at 2pm for a musical sampler.

Email: thewildrover.radiozero@gmail.com

If You're Irish

As well as celebrating St. Patrick's Day, the Wild Rover celebrates its first year on Radio Zero. The show has some classic ballads from The Dubliners, The Clancy Bothers, Rattle The Boards, The Green Fields of America, Cara Dillon and The Corrigans. More traditional music comes from Planxty, El McMeen and The Bothy Band. A bit of story-telling comes from Eddie Lenihan's version of St. Patrick's meeting with Crom Dubh and the show ends with a rousing version of Ruby Murray's 'If You're Irish' accompanied by an ensemble of Radio Zero's finest presenters.
